Episode Cats99

From Countdown

Episode Cats99, billed as 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown Series 16, Episode 3 was a special episode broadcast on 27 July 2018, as part of 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown Series 16.

Regular Sean Lock and Acting Team Captain Alan Carr were the contestants, along with Miles Jupp and Roisin Conaty who were their teammates respectively, while Jimmy Carr reprised his role as the host.

The match saw Sean Lock, with the assistance of Miles Jupp, winning by 46 – 19 in an 7-rounder and they won a Countdown croquet set.

Rachel Riley was, as ever, the arithmetician. The Dictionary Corner guest was Ivan Brackenbury, and the lexicographer was Susie Dent.

Interesting and notable moments from the episode are listed below:

1) During the Introduction, Alan gave away merchandise he created to the audience, to which Jimmy replied that his actions were similar to "the shittiest version of Oprah ever".

2) During the 30 seconds in Round 1, "Alan", along with "Jimmy" performed acrobatic moves in the centre of the studio. Despite this, Alan managed to find the word JOINER.

3) In Rounds 2 and 3, Miles and Roisin were both not asked to show Roisin and Sean respectively that they had identical declarations.

4) In Round 4, Alan was hesistant when declaring 684 and ended up with 650 initially, only for his solution to be finished off by Sean who was not playing the Round. As a result, no points were awarded to their team and his declaration is reflected as a blank here. Also, as Jimmy and the other contestants wanted to see how random CECIL was, he asked Rachel to press it again after the Round predicting what the next target would be, only for it to be 929, then 666 and finally 162, missing all of their predictions. (All three targets generated afterwards had possible solutions.)

5) In Round 5, it was dubbed a Tension Round; points were doubled and the clock music was replaced with a techno version of it coupled with sirens. When the time was up, confetti shot out from behind the contestants, notably scaring Alan and Roisin. Thus, the maximum APOTHEM was worth 14 points in this case.

6) During the 30 seconds in Round 6, Jimmy tried to "win" a toy from a Claw Crane, however it malfunctioned and when he tried to put his hand in to rig it, he ended up getting "stuck" in the machine itself until the round was over.

NOTE 1: In this version, both players' declarations were allowed, although points were only awarded for the best answer.

NOTE 2: This episode is no longer available on Channel 4's website following Ivan's admission in January 2023 that he had downloaded child pornography.
