Apterous Summer U800 2009

The Apterous Summer U800 of 2009 tournament was held from June 22 through July 26, 2009, on the Apterous website as part of the Apterous Summer 2009 series of tournaments. It was open to those whose Apterous rating, as recorded by the organiser Andrew Feist, was not more than 800 during the registration period.

Tournament structure

The eight participants were split into two pools of four players, roughly equal in strength. During the first three weeks of competition, a round robin tournament was played in each pool. Then, the top two players from each pool entered the top playoff bracket, where they played their counterparts from the other pool. (The game between the #1 and #2 from each pool was carried over into the playoff standings.) Similarly, the bottom two players from each pool entered the bottom playoff bracket. Each fixture was a best-of-three match of standard 15-round games.

Preliminary results

In pool 1, at the end of the round robin the final standings were:

2. Adam Dexter 1-1
3. James Leroux 1-1
4. Supee Juachan 0-3

The match between Adam Dexter and James Leroux was never played; Adam advanced to the top bracket by virtue of better points per game.

In pool 2, at the end of the round robin the final standings were:

1. Ben Ziek 3-0
2. Maxine Silkstone 2-1
3. Gregor Morgan 1-2
4. Steve Rogers 0-3

Steve Rogers only played the first round match before vanishing (and consequently forfeiting the remainder of the games).

Playoff results

In the top bracket, the final standings were:

1. Ian Dent 2-1
2. Maxine Silkstone 2-1
3. Ben Ziek 1-1
4. Adam Dexter 0-2

A circle of death nearly formed; however Adam Dexter and Ben Ziek never played their match, meaning Ian and Maxine were part of a two-way tie instead. As Ian had a better game record then Maxine in the playoff bracket (5-3 vs. 5-4), he took the championship.

In the bottom bracket, the final standings were:

2. Gregor Morgan 2-1
3. Supee Juachan 1-2
4. Steve Rogers 0-3

with again Steve Rogers forfeiting his games.
