Episode Cats59

From Countdown

Episode Cats59, billed as 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown Series 9, Episode 4 was a special episode broadcast on 24 March 2016, as part of 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown Series 9.

8 Out of 10 Cats regulars Sean Lock and Jon Richardson were the contestants, along with Kevin Bridges and Rebecca Front who were their teammates, while Jimmy Carr reprised his role as the host.

The match saw Jon Richardson, with the assistance of Rebecca Front, winning 40 – 7 in an 7-rounder and they won a Countdown baby bouncer.

Rachel Riley was, as ever, the arithmetician. The Dictionary Corner guest was Joe Lycett, and the lexicographer was Susie Dent.

Just before Round 5, Sean and Jon were invited to play "Mr and Mr" (a play on Mr and Mrs) in which Jon was tested about Sean's personality. Jon got all three questions right, thus five points were awarded to his team. (Note that because Jon was the only one answering as he came on to the centre of the studio first, he had to answer all three questions correctly to obtain the bonus points.)

Interesting and notable moments from the episode are listed below:

1) In Round 1, when Rachel rearranged the letters to form Sean's word, she cheekily rearranged the remaining letters which spelled out arsole ☓, which could be a clever disguise for the rude word ARSEHOLE and prompted Susie to check for the validity of the former.

2) During the 30 seconds in Round 3, Jimmy went into a cannon which Rachel lit up, prompting "him" to "fly" across the studio and "fall" onto the floor where his seat was.

3) In Round 4, as Jon failed to declare he had 147, no points were awarded despite having the correct solution. Thus, his solution is assumed to be that of Rachel's one as well.

4) During the 30 seconds in Round 6, Jimmy "cloned" ten versions of himself which came out of the "Jimmy Replicator 2000". Each of them then stood behind him until the end of the show. However, none of them were credited for their appearance.

5) During the Conundrum, as Sean buzzed the correct answer about five seconds after the clock stopped for the conundrum, his team were unable to obtain any more points.

NOTE 1: In this version, both players' declarations were allowed, although points were only awarded for the best answer.

NOTE 2: Even though Kevin misdeclared MORTALS as a six in Round 1, points were still awarded at Jimmy's discretion as he admitted his mistake before he declared. Coupled with that, this is the only episode of this version of the show to date that Dictionary Corner has spotted every single Maximum on the episode.

A short segment of this episode was sampled in the 13 May 2021 episode of Jon Richardson and Lucy Beaumont's sitcom Meet the Richardsons.
