Episode S40 was broadcast on 2 July 2013, as a special episode between two finalists who have become a couple since meeting during a recording of the show. The episode was in the old 15-round format, despite the change to the new 15-round format earlier in the year. It was broadcast following that day's regular episode unexpectedly being yanked from the schedule.

Michelle Nevitt played Ryan Taylor, with Ryan Taylor winning 88 – 81. The Dictionary Corner guest was Dave Spikey, and the lexicographer was Susie Dent.
