He is also a Scrabble Grandmaster and was the 2016 National Scrabble Champion. At the NSC Finals in Milton Keynes, he won 14 games out of 17, beating former Countdown contestant Lewis Mackay in the final round to win the title by just one win. Phil went on to win the same title in 2019, beating former Champion of Champions winner Paul Gallen by a single point in the final round. He has also represented England at a number of World Championships and is married to Series 45 contestant Beverley Calder.
