Austin Shin
Austin Shin was a contestant in Series 49.
Aged 13, he lost to the eventual Series champion John Davies by just one point. This was Davies' smallest winning margin in any of his 11 Series 49 games. Despite not having won a game, Shin was invited back for a special against Beth Sutton and won with 98 points, scoring in every round but two.
He is also a Scrabble Grandmaster and came second in the inaugural World Youth Scrabble Championship (now the WESPA Youth Cup) in 2006. In 2017, he became both the North American Collins Scrabble Words Champion and the ABSP National Scrabble Champion.
He is also the co-founder of "Tablet Scrabble" – an initiative involving playing the game using a mobile device and wi-fi instead of a traditional board to allow faster games and attract new players – alongside 2017 World Scrabble Champion David Eldar.
