Austin Shin was a contestant in Series 49.

Aged 13 at the time of his appearance, he lost to the eventual Series champion John Davies by just one point. This was Davies' smallest winning margin in any of his eleven Series 49 games. Despite not having won a regular game, Shin was invited back for a special against Beth Sutton and won with 98 points, scoring in every round but two.

He is also a Scrabble Grandmaster and came second in the inaugural World Youth Scrabble Championship in 2006, as well as winning the ABSP National Scrabble Championship in 2017. He currently lives in the USA, where he is a 2-time US champion under the Collins dictionary division.
