Carl Varney (sp Karl Varney), was 16 at the time of appearing on Countdown. He was at Mid-Warwickshire College of Further Education and took a bus-load of his college friends with him to Leeds!
He used to go regularly to Scrable clubs in Leamington Spa and Rugby, and was tutored by Phil Appleby, who has done extremely well in the National Scrabble Championships, and has previously appeared on Countdown, and also the morning Countdown on the Channel 4 Daily.
Karl (me) now lives in Coventry with his partner, and still watches Countdown every day.
