Episode 1854 was broadcast on 8 October 1996, as the final of Championship of Champions VIII.

Kenneth Michie played Chris Rogers, with Chris Rogers winning 71 – 49. The Dictionary Corner guest was Nigel Rees, and the lexicographer was Susie Dent. Of note, in round 13, CECIL generated a target of 100, resulting in the CoC final's last numbers game being extremely easy. 100 may have been dropped as a target shortly afterward for this reason.

By winning this final, Chris Rogers advanced to the quarter-final stages of the Supreme Championship.
