Episode 1907

From Countdown

Episode 1907 was broadcast on 20 December 1996, and was the grand final of the Supreme Championship.

Allan Saldanha played Harvey Freeman, with Harvey Freeman winning 82 – 79. The Dictionary Corner guest was Nigel Rees, and the lexicographer was Catherine Clarke.

The audience for this final comprised most of the contestants in the series. The first of the two conundrums, in Round 7, was not solved by either contestant, but when thrown open to the audience was solved by just one member, Andrew Perry, who had been beaten by Harvey Freeman in the quarter-final one week earlier. Round 4's letters game was also opened to the audience to see whether any of its members could top the contestants' scores of five points; no one therein proved to be able to find a word longer than five letters.

Perhaps suitably for a final, CECIL displayed a real lack of any sense of occasion, with the first two numbers games being incredibly easy, with Whiteley offering the solution to Round 6 rather than the contestants.
