Episode 2791

Episode 2791 was broadcast on 12 June 2000, and was the first quarter-final of Series 42.

David Ballheimer played Jim Ainsworth, with David Ballheimer winning 63 – 60. The Dictionary Corner guest was Ned Sherrin, and the lexicographer was Damian Eadie.

According to Ballheimer, his declaration of SCREES in Round 7 was originally disallowed as Eadie interpreted SCREE as a mass noun and therefore could not allow SCREES. However, the production team reversed the decision after Round 8, after Ballheimer was allowed to give an alternate definition which was not a mass noun and thus the word could be allowed. This reversal proved to influence the outcome of the game.
