Episode 601 was broadcast on 30 June 1987, as a specially extended 50-minute edition for the final of Championship of Champions III. Harvey Freeman played David Trace, with Harvey Freeman winning 115 – 107. The Dictionary Corner guest was Sally James, and the lexicographer was Della Thompson.
This episode featured the highest winning and losing scores ever achieved under the 14 round format or in any game in the 9 round era. It was also the first ever episode where both contestants achieved a century (the next one would be 15 years later).
