Episode Cats61

From Countdown

Episode Cats61, billed as 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown Series 10, Episode 1 was a special episode broadcast on 5 August 2016, as part of 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown Series 10.

8 Out of 10 Cats regulars Sean Lock and Jon Richardson were the contestants, along with Henning Wehn and Victoria Coren Mitchell who were their teammates, while Jimmy Carr reprised his role as the host.

The match saw Jon Richardson, with the assistance of Victoria Coren Mitchell, winning by 68 – 25 in an 7-rounder and they won a pair of Countdown surfboards.

Rachel Riley was, as ever, the arithmetician. The Dictionary Corner guest was Tom Allen, and the lexicographer was Susie Dent. Joe Wilkinson also made a special appearance on the show just as Rachel picked up a letters tile with Joe's face on it in Round 5, driving a mini-train onto the set and assisting her to place the letters in Round 6. Pat Sharp, a famous DJ in the 1980s, also made a special appearance during Round 3 as well where he was "brought back from the dead".

Interesting and notable moments from the episode are listed below:

1) In Round 1, the clock music was replaced by Jimmy's drum accompaniment which was slightly longer than the 30 seconds allocated.

2) In Round 2, despite Jon having declared he obtained the target, he was not asked to show it. However, it can be assumed he had the same solution as Victoria.

3) During the 30 seconds in Round 5, Joe asked Henning and Jon to come aboard to do "Countdown on the Hot Guy Express" and made an anti-clockwise loop around the studio, with the front audience popping poppers, confetti and spraying at them. The tile with Joe's face was taken as a U, and as a result, when Rachel was re-arranging to form Henning's word, the rude word CUM was formed on the board.

4) Just before Round 6, Joe used a drone to fetch two cans of beer to him and Rachel, making this the first time a drone has appeared on the show.

NOTE 1: In this version, both players' declarations were allowed, although points were only awarded for the best answer.

NOTE 2: In Round 2, Rachel made a mistake when showing Henning's solution by subtracting the "75" instead of adding it. Also, in Round 6, extra letters were used, making the total number of letters used to be 12. However, as the maximum was only nine, the maximum is only nine points and not the standard 18.

NOTE 3: The 1st Teaser's answer, labrador ☓, is invalid in the ODO as it is capitalised.

A short segment of this episode was sampled in the 6 May 2021 episode of Jon Richardson and Lucy Beaumont's sitcom Meet the Richardsons.
