Gyles Brandreth is the dictionary corner guest with the most appearances on Countdown, totalling almost 300. Making his debut in Series 2, he quickly became an almost constant presence on the set throughout the 1980s before departing in 1992 after becoming MP for City of Chester in that year's general election. He was booted out in the subsequent general election in 1997, however, and returned to Countdown shortly thereafter. Considered to be very much a member of the 'Countdown Family', Gyles was the guest for the first ever fifteen-round game, and presented a special show dedicated to Carol Vorderman prior to her final appearance on the show, which Gyles was also the dictionary corner guest for. He also once hosted an unaired pilot edition of Junior Countdown, but nothing ever came of it. His edited diaries, published as Something Sensational to Read in the Train, contain a number of scurrilous anecdotes concerning John Meade.

Gyles is also a board game enthusiast, being a former European Monopoly champion and the honorary president of the ABSP.
