Ian Volante was a contestant in Series 56. He is a statistician from Edinburgh. He is also an Apterite.
He has appeared on University Challenge, Mastermind and Only Connect. On 31 May 2010, he appeared on A Question of Genius where he came 2nd out of 6 contestants, beaten only by the previous day's winner. In 2014, he appeared on the revived Fifteen to One, reaching the heat final and eventually finishing 3rd. He made yet another quiz show appearance on The Switch on 29 November 2019.
In 2000, Volante also gained some degree of infamy after he qualified for the Fifteen to One Grand Final of Series 29 that December with 211 points, but was subsequently unable to appear in the Final because he became stranded in Australia the week before the studio date for the Final - which they covered up by concocting a story about a "mystery contestant" needing to be removed for legal reasons. The reality was that, in fact, there was actually no contestant in Volante's intended position on the set for that Final at all - after Volante's flight back to the UK from Australia was cancelled, he was left unable to contact the studio staff to let them know of his situation; when he didn't show up on the studio date the producers simply proceeded with just 14 contestants, and the broadcast gave the impression that the "mystery contestant" in Volante's position had been eliminated in the first round.
He made his CO-event debut at CoNot 2011, followed in 2012 by an appearance at COEDI.
Volante will return to Countdown as a contestant in Series 82.
