Luke Boynton in Series 83, 17 years after his first appearance.

Luke Boynton was a contestant in Series 51 and and octochamp in Series 83. As of his second appearance, he was a senior finance manager from Birmingham. He is also a poker player, and is the winner of the 2019 International Poker Open. He will almost certainly return for the series finals in June 2021.

Boynton first appeared on Countdown in 2004. On his début, he played well, but lost on an unsolved crucial conundrum against would-be octochamp Sweyn Kirkness. On his incredible "second début" in 2021, Boynton set the bar for the highest score of Series 83 so far, and achieved the second-highest ever score for a challenger against a daily champion with 138 points – one short of Luke Johnson-Davies's 139 – to stun six-time winner and Apterite Tom Vincent. On top of this, Boynton pulled off a perfect letters-round performance in spite of very difficult numbers rounds, making this one of the most impressive maiden wins in Countdown history. Clips of the game were shown on Gogglebox on 26 March. In his second win, he improved on that by scoring 141 points. In his third win he won by over 100 in a Jos game – a game in which Dictionary Corner nor Rachel could beat Boynton, though NUCLEOIDS and SIMARUBA were missed and were not mentioned on the show. In his fourth win, he reduced Apterite Bobby Casey to the joint second-lowest score in the 15-round format. In his fifth game, Boynton scored 147, the joint third-highest score in Countdown history; two unsolved numbers rounds prevented him from breaking the current record of 152. In his sixth game, he was reduced to 107 points. On his seventh game, despite being beaten on a letters round, he recovered and scored 137 points. In this game, he also became the first contestant in the history of the show to offer twelve nine-letter words in an octorun. In his eight game, despite not finding a nine letter word, he wrapped up his octorun with the second-highest ever cumulative score achieved by an octochamp with 1,032 to become the fourth octochamp of the series and the standout number 1 seed. He is also the third octochamp in Countdown history to score over 1,000 points in an octorun, after Elliott Mellor and Johnson-Davies himself.
