Prior to appearing on Countdown, he had previously been a contestant on the BBC game show Going For Gold in 1991.

He is notable for being only one of 2 contestants to play against a contestant who failed to score in a game. In addition, Jones also beat future Series 59 champion Junaid Mubeen.
