Phillip Alder was a contestant in Series 4 and Series 5. He was the editor of Bridge magazine.

Alder amassed four wins in the preliminaries, and, under the seeding rules as they were later standardised, would have qualified for the Series 5 finals as the #3 seed; however, at the time, only points that were amassed during the same series as the finalists' appearance were counted, meaning that Alder's two Series 4 wins were ignored and he did not qualify. (It is also for this reason that Clive Freedman was required to play nine preliminaries before retiring.)
