Robin McKay was an octochamp in Series 74, and one of a very few contestants to have made eight century scores in their heat games. He is an Apterite and a passionate Wigan Athletic fan (possibly the only one in the world).
His début score of 129 is the joint-highest by any contestant in the history of the show (along with Giles Hutchings in Series 68 and Jamie Ilett-Jones in Series 71). He is known for his catchphrase "What you do is..." at the start of any numbers solution.
A total of 1119 points were available to McKay during his octochamp run, the highest total ever available to a player who did in fact go on to become an octochamp.
McKay returned for the finals as number 2 seed, and defeated Sean Cooke in the quarter-final to set up a semi-final with number 3 seed Ann Dibben. With only four points separating them in their octoruns, this was always going to be a tight game, and viewers were not disappointed as McKay and Dibben equalled each other in 12 of the first 14 rounds, with Dibben going into the crucial conundrum with a 1 point advantage. Neither player solved MEMYSHAPE, and so McKay was defeated, but finished with an impressive record of 10 centuries in 10 games.
