Series 23 ran from December 1991 to March 1992. The twenty-third of 53 series presented by Richard Whiteley was won by Gareth Williams.

Series 23, 25 and 45 were the only series in which the finals went completely true to the seedings (i.e., the higher seed always beat the lower seed, with no upsets).

Fiona Davies, who would have appeared as fifth seed with 274 points, was unable to attend the finals and instead was given a special playoff against the next series' eighth seed, Maureen Grabham, and went on to reach the Grand Final of that series. For the finals of this series, she was replaced by two-time winner Glen Webb. Also, Gareth Williams was awarded seven bonus points after Dictionary Corner had wrongly disallowed ELITIST in one of his heats, although the seedings were unaffected.

Between Series 22 and Series 37, players were ranked by total number of points, including winning and losing scores.
