Stan Arnott was a finalist in Series 40. He was a bricklayer from Carluke, Lanarkshire.

Notably, Stan qualified for the quarter finals as #8 seed for this series with 5 wins out of 6 with a points total of 308 only because of a mistake in his second appearance going unnoticed. During this episode, Stan offered an illegal solution to the second Numbers Game in Round 8 which should have been disallowed, as he used one of the numbers twice - his calculation of (75 - 2) x (5 - 2) to reach the target of 219 with the numbers 75, 7, 5, 2, 10 and 10 saw him use the '2' twice over when there was, in fact, only one '2' in the selection. Therefore, whilst this error did not affect the outcome of the episode, the final score should have been 51 - 48 rather than 61 - 41.

Had this error been spotted at the time, then the 10 lost points would have meant that Stan would not have qualified for the quarter finals of this series, as he would have only have accumulated 298 points, and therefore would have lost out to #9 seed John Morrison, whose aggregate points total of 305 points from an identical record of 5 wins from 6 games would have usurped Stan's total by 7 points (in fact, Stan would have dropped to 10th place in the seedings, as the actual #10 seed, Daniel Holloway, would also have moved ahead of him by 2 points, on a total of 300 points from 5 wins from 6 games).
