Hi Johnny,

Good to see all of your contributions here at the wiki. All very useful and informative.

Just one thing, though. I feel you're being a little premature describing the current top five seeds in Series 62 as finalists. Ok, they've qualified for the finals, but qualification doesn't mean that they actually play. There have been a number of occasion in recent years when people in the top eight places have not appeared due to a variety of reasons. This is why we maintain a leaderboard right down to the tenth position, until such time as it is known generally who actually plays. It would be fair enough to say, for each of the people, that they have qualified for the finals, but I believe that's as far as it should go at present. (Others my disagree with me)

I look forward to reading many more of your contributions here.--Drawoh 09:27, 11 May 2010 (BST)

Ah, I was wondering if this was going to be an issue. It's true, finalists sometimes can't make their positions. I will edit the pages to include "qualified for the finals." JohnnyCanuck 21:04, 11 May 2010 (BST)

Hmm. Not Ryan Vickers then. Well that's one eliminated. Only 34114999 left to choose from (acording to Wiki).--Drawoh 07:50, 26 May 2010 (BST)

Episodes category

Hi Johnny. You may have noticed that I've created an alternative template for use in episodes such as your dream sequence, so that these games are not included in the Episodes with round details category. Can you change each of the {{R-letters}} templates to {{Rx-letters}} in all of your dream games. You'll know when you've picked all the lines, as the Episodes with round details category will no longer be generated for the page. Many thanks. If you prefer, I can do it for you. :) --Drawoh 17:35, 20 July 2010 (BST)

Interesting. Of course, being a grand final, this would probably have been a 14 round game. I haven't worked out any accurate way to make 14-rounders yet, though. JohnnyCanuck 17:07, 23 July 2010 (BST)

Episode 2674

Firstly,

1) "Gray" is spelt Grey in England (and USA - I think)

2) It wasn't "Gray", it was the purple set.

and last and least, the facts are blatantly obvious.

Series 28

If you want to claim Series 28, go through the correct outlet, which is booking them out on the forum. JRTerrier24 17:41, 19 September 2010 (BST)

In order to join the forum, do I still have to use my real name, or is this an exception? Also, does it make a difference that I'm doing Series 28 out of order? It's just that the recaps were put up on The Countdown Page and I don't see why I shouldn't add them. JohnnyCanuck 20:59, 20 September 2010 (BST)
As James has been told already, on the front page there is an invitation for anybody to edit any page, so you can't stop JohnnyCanuck from doing Series 28 just because he's not booked on the forum. So, if JohnnyCanuck is reading this, then feel free to do Series 28 as James just wants stuff to be as orderly as the soldiers in Afghanistan.

So, James, don't be so harsh on ordinary folk like me and JohnnyCanuck, don't tell him to spend his precious minutes on the forum, and just because you don't like me or JohnnyCanuck (by the way, why do you revert ALL my edits, even when they are useful?) So Johnny, go and do it, against James' will if you have to. More recaps are better than organised recaps. Speaking of which, I need to do some which I booked on the forum. --The Doctor 17:17, 21 September 2010 (BST)

There's no need to be mean to anyone here; I was just curious about how to book on the forum because I don't wish to reveal my real name anywhere. I'm pretty busy this week and probably won't have time to recap Series 28 much, if at all, anyway. JohnnyCanuck 17:23, 21 September 2010 (BST)

Series 63 Final

If I was a betting person, I'd go for 17th December, even if the odds were not in my favour. However, I'm happy to wait until 17th is confirmed.--Drawoh 16:46, 21 September 2010 (BST)

New recaps

Johnny, if you could, don't do the recap if you only have a "draft". JRTerrier24 20:27, 19 November 2015 (GMT)

OK, no problem. I was unsure whether posting what I could was beneficial; I record results during show chat on Apterous, and I figured some people might appreciate seeing the recap as soon as possible after the show. But people in chat are now getting more and more thorough with the details and they may eventually include all the necessary info. In any case, I'm not going to do any more "drafts", so it's all cool. JohnnyCanuck 20:53, 19 November 2015 (GMT)

Requested deletions

Two questions:

  1. Would you please delete Lisa G Douglas? I use Follow That Page to track the RecentChanges, and it just dropped off the end of the 30 day list. Jade Goody and John Jackson also need to go, while Jeremy Mansfield, Elliott Mellor, Andy Staufenbiel and Episode SPOILERS5 are also questionable, which I found through Special:NewPages. Special:ShortPages might also be worth a trawl.
  2. How do you become an administrator of this place? I'd like to be able to delete spam articles myself.--Launchballer 16:56, 17 May 2017 (BST)
  1. Sure, I'll remove the first four pages; up until recently I was not an administrator and could only recommend them for deletion, and I guess in these four cases it didn't happen. Lisa G Douglas was a spam page that never got noticed by anyone else; Jade Goody had some weird in-jokey stuff and wasn't linked to by any other page; John Jackson has a blank page; and Jeremy Mansfield is probably not notable enough, as A Word or 2 has its own article and it already subsumes the content of his. I'm leaving Elliott's and Andy's pages there for now, as Andy has been to a co-event (traditionally, I believe this is one of the criteria that allows a person to have an article on here) and I'm not sure whether Elliott has but he's definitely interested, as well as being among the strongest Apterites. Finally, as for Episode SPOILERS5, that episode is part of an Apterous tourney, which typically aren't notable enough to receive pages on here, so I'm debating as to whether I should remove the Spoilers tourney pages altogether. Thank you for your input and I'm glad you've caught these pages.
  2. The only way I know of is to contact Charlie on the forum, on Apterous or by email and he should be able to give you administrator rights. When I asked him if I could be an administrator he gave me the rights immediately (admittedly after being an active member on here for 7 years), so it's not like there's an application form or anything. JohnnyCanuck 12:08, 18 May 2017 (BST)
Two more questions. Could you delete Category:Episodes with Desmond Lynam as a guest and Alex Smith, and what is Charlie's username?--Launchballer 17:41, 4 June 2017 (BST)
Prior to the Apto tourney system, tourneys were listed on here. Indeed, there was an "online tournaments" list at the bottom of the Co-event page, if I remember correctly. Think I might have been the one to remove said list!! I don't really see the need for mass deletion of Apto tourneys over the years. The Doctor 16:48, 4 September 2018 (UTC)

Helping Recaps during the Christmas Period

Hi Johnny, saw your post for help in the Final Week of Countdown this year in the Forums...I am more than willing to help you put up given that I am free during that week...just that I need to have access to Lexplorer so that I can get the Maximum Length Words! Maybe I can call on Ray Wilding's help for this (Hope he's free!) --RLSJ1997 15:42, 04 December 2017 (GMT)

Thanks VERY much for the offer and I'll try to arrange it so that you can have access to Lex. Do you need to be a subscriber in order to see maxes? I seem to remember that the max menu worked even when I was just a trial member. JohnnyCanuck 15:47, 4 December 2017 (GMT)
Hmm...I haven't even registered for Apterous yet! Maybe I should do it over the weekend! Hope Access to Lexplorer is Perm as I do not intend to be a full member...I'm just more of a Recapper and watching out for new words I might not have heard of! --RLSJ1997 15:55, 4 December 2017 (GMT)
If you register for Apterous, I think you'll be able to use the Maximums menu in Lexplorer even as a trial member. If I find out otherwise, I'll let you know. If you can do this before 18 December, I'd be happy to let you be a supply recapper. Cheers and season's greetings. JohnnyCanuck 15:58, 4 December 2017 (GMT)
Alright, will do so! Thanks and same to you too! --RLSJ1997 16:06, 4 December 2017 (GMT)

UPDATE: Hi Johnny, just decided to join the community and play along come 2018 so I subscribed and I have access to Lexplorer! --RLSJ1997 15:20, 11 December 2017 (GMT)

OK, thanks very much for the heads-up. Glad you're able to use the tool, and welcome to the Aptosphere! JohnnyCanuck 15:22, 11 December 2017 (GMT)

Admin Errors

There are loads - loads - of errors like the one mentioned. If it's an error, it needs mentioning. The conundrum having two solutions, for example, doesn't "affect" the result, but it's an administrative error. Yes, the category title may be poorly worded, but it's the category used for "the production team cocked up", regardless of effect. The Doctor 07:10, 18 September 2018 (UTC)

Calendar Countdown

Hello, Johnny! I see that you're an active user here thus I decided to write you. I have all Calendar Countdown episodes (except CC8) and two pilot episodes. Here they are: torrent link. I could write down all results of these games, but I'm a newbie here and I don't know how to work with templates and wiki markup properly to fill in the results. Dicto 12:10, 18 September 2018 (UTC)

I've just tried that link and it came back with a 502 Bad Gateway. What I suggest is this: Write them out in a format you feel comfortable with, such as Word (using tabs), screendump the results and upload them as an image. One of us can then fill them out properly.--Launchballer 12:51, 18 September 2018 (UTC)
Hm, I have no problems with downloading it. Try this magnet link: magnet:?xt=urn:btih:ebd4b3ca770117a41ad1e36785abeb1e2dbfe0d3&dn=Calendar+Countdown+%281981+%26ndash%3B+1982%29
Sure, I can do it in Word but first I want to share these files with you ;) Dicto 13:18, 18 September 2018 (UTC)
Hi guys, I've successfully got hold of these episodes now -- thanks for providing them, Dicto. I'll probably start adding recaps early tomorrow afternoon. JohnnyCanuck 20:56, 18 September 2018 (UTC)

Question About Episode Summaries

So out of curiosity, I started looking up strings of letters. If we find a situation where there is a longer word not confirmed on the episode, is it within guidelines to note that on the episode page? For instance, the Season 61 Grand Final had a round of LWTEIERTN and the best found on-air was 7 letters, but an 8 letter word (NETTLIER - bristly or very irritable, as in prickly) exists. The question is whether such better words should be noted on the page with a note that they exist but were not found on air. If so, the question is how to do that while preserving the "perfect score" status that some episodes are given. Similarly, "NLNAEPUTO" produces "PENTANOL", some kind of alcohol. As a reference to this, I saw on one of the 8 Out of 10 Cats episodes that they almost overlooked a 9 letter word until someone noticed it on the dictionary page on camera and it was pointed out, so it may be worth noting better words on the pages simply because they may have just not been found. Cyclone 05:51, 27 February 2019 (UTC)

Words not found by Dictionary Corner that are the longest words in that round are listed under 'others' with an asterisk. Dictionary used at the time of that episode was Oxford Dictionary of English 2nd Edition revised (See: http://wiki.apterous.org/Oxford_Dictionary_of_English), neither of the words given were in that dictionary. Countdown currently uses the premium version of Oxford Dictionaries Online (https://premium.oxforddictionaries.com), though the free version is not dissimilar (https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/).
I do not currently own that dictionary, but can confirm words found using Internet sources. Interestingly, one particular word finder doesn't find "AIRSIDES" in US and Canada but finds it in the UK one, so there are subtle differences between the countries, it seems. It seems it may be also important to note whether the words are in the UK dictionary, and that is one I would not have access to on my shores unless, by chance, it is exported and sold here.
But back to my original question. Words found after the fact are addable, and that is what the asterisk means. So if I started going through episodes and adding words, that would be fine then? Would it thus be OK in cases where a perfect score is determined to have occurred to note that a better score was in fact possible? (Noting that evidently they have to be found in that link you provided, and using something like a Scrabble word finder is apparently not "legal" even for words that exist.) Nettlier BTW stems from "Nettly", so I would suggest it's still valid, and Wikipedia has articles on Pentanol, so perhaps Countdown is being limiting to not noting words that actually do exist by being bound to a specific dictionary. Cyclone 16:51, 27 February 2019 (UTC)
If a word is not in the dictionary used, it is not valid. All words given reflect the dictionary at the time, no words need adding to past episodes. Apterous uses its own solver to determine the best words in a given round. NETTLIER is not currently valid (it's not specified under nettly: https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/nettly), PENTANOL is currently valid (https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/pentanol), but would not have been in the dictionary used at that time. I hope that clears things up.
Yeah, it makes sense that the disctionary used at the time is what is considered valid. It's interesting that Pentanol, which has existed since at least 2004, was not valid in 2010. But perhaps it was not added until after that episode, so yeah. Even so, it's interesting given I'm sure I can find other cases of missing words, but I have no way to know if what I find now was legal then or not. It's also interesting that NETTLIER is not valid, but if someone were to come up with "SILLIER" (from "SILLY"), that likely could be valid under an identical rule (Y-IER). But what do I know. LOL Cyclone 18:16, 28 February 2019 (UTC)

Undeletions

I just tried to perform a histmerge at Chris Smith (Series 34) and discovered that Special:Undelete is not allowing me to select the revisions so I can restore them. I quickly moved it over from Chris Smith (Series 80), a duplicate, but does this wiki keep deleted revisions?--Launchballer 19:52, 30 May 2019 (UTC)

Are you looking to access the previous revisions done on the (Series 80) page? JohnnyCanuck 15:50, 31 May 2019 (UTC)
No, what I did was overwrite (Series 34) with (Series 34) (Series 80), delete (Series 34), and then try to restore all the revisions and then discovered the revisions weren't there. I had to move (Series 80), another duplicate, to (Series 34), and fill in the gaps myself. I want all of the revisions from all three articles to appear under (Series 34).--Launchballer 17:46, 31 May 2019 (UTC)
