He pipped [[Peter Coutts]] by just two points in Coutts' eighth game, and went on to make three [[century|centuries]] before losing to [[Cyril Cohen]].

A solicitor, in 2003, he was invited back to play fellow solicitor [[Simon Cobb]] in a [[special episode]].

He has appeared on several other quiz shows, most notably ''{{w|University Challenge}}'' (as the captain of the {{w|Oriel College, Oxford}} team that finished as runners-up in the {{w|University Challenge 1998-99|1998-99}} series), ''{{w|BrainTeaser}}'', ''{{w|Fifteen to One}}'', ''{{w|100% (game show)|100%}}'', ''One To Win'', ''{{w|Grand Slam (British game show)|Grand Slam}}'', ''{{w|Only Connect}}'' (as the winner of the first series in 2008, and two Champion of Champions specials), ''{{w|Cleverdicks}}'' and ''{{w|Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? (British game show)|Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?}}'', winning £64,000 in the last of these. In 2019, he won the 66th series of ''{{w|Brain of Britain}}'' and, in 2021, he won the "Brain of Brains" title. He has also taken part in the British, European and World Quiz Championships on numerous occasions.
