Sam Gaffney was a viscount in and the champion of Series 4 of Letters and Numbers. He is also the champion of Masters Series.

Gaffney began his run on 19 December 2011, deposing two-time champion Megan Marks and in his next game he found the nine-letter word ABDUCTION. He amassed six wins and 370 points (excluding 10 points from a tie-break conundrum in his fourth game) to become the #1 seed of Series 4; true to the formbook, he returned for the finals and defeated Sebastian Ham, Daniel Chua and Alan Nash to emerge as the fourth winner of the show's grand prize.

Several months later Gaffney returned for the show's Masters Series (equivalent to Championship of Champions). He won the series by defeating the runner-up of Series 3 Jeremy Schiftan in the quarter-final, the runner-up of Series 1 Naween Fernando in the semi-final and the runner-up of Series 3 Matthew Thomason in the final.
