An actor who first came to prominence in the 1970 cult serial Doomwatch, Powell went on to play the title role in the film Jesus of Nazareth, and also starred in a remake of The Thirty Nine Steps, which spawned a spin-off TV series, Hannay. He also starred with Jasper Carrott in the sitcom The Detectives and he played a surgeon in Holby City.
