Episode 1 was broadcast on 2 November 1982 at 4:45pm, as part of Series 1. The game was later repeated on 2 November 2007 to recognise Countdown's 25th anniversary.

Note: Before the first numbers game CECIL initially generated a target of 988. However, this was meant as an example, as it was the first time CECIL had ever been used, and not as the actual target for this round.
An inauspicious start to say the least! Horrendous selections, uninteresting words, no good finds from DC, terrible credits, a cacophonous theme tune and Richard Whiteley reading so intently from the autocue that one wonders if he was the inspiration for that scene in Bruce Almighty. Luckily it was all uphill from here! I've not included a couple of the DC beaters in the final maximum because I don't have a suitable dictionary in which to check them, so this might get reposted if I get hold of one.
