Matthew Thomason was a viscount in and the runner-up of Series 2 of Letters and Numbers. Thomason began his run on 30 December 2010, early on in the series, prevailing over Jodi Knight to take the champion's chair; he proceeded to win his next five games, accumulate 310 points, and retire unbeaten from the heats, being the first player in Series 2 to have won more than two games.

Thomason ultimately reached the series finals in the autumn as #4 seed. Here, true to the formbook, he bested Victor Tung in the quarters, before advancing to the semis and pulling off an upset over #2-ranked Tamara McMahon. This hereby brought him to the grand final against the hotly favoured Tony Loui. Thomason kept the game to a crucial conundrum, but was finally bested when Loui unravelled SHOUTCAME in just two seconds.

Thomason returned for the show's Masters (Championship of Champions) mini-series in June 2012. Here, he first took revenge on Tony Loui, eliminating him in the championship quarter-finals. A further victory over Toby Baldwin of Series 4 brought him to the grand final of the Masters, but he went down on a crucial conundrum here to again take the runner-up spot. Thomason is probably the most successful Letters and Numbers contestant to have not won a competition.
