15 round format (old)

From Countdown
Revision as of 10:38, 12 June 2010 by Drawoh (talk | contribs) (Undo revision 50643: celebrity anecdote shouldn't link to just one celebrity out of many)

The 15-round format was introduced as the show's length increased from a 30-minute to 45-minute slot with Series 46.

Whereas previously contestants picked the same number of letters and numbers rounds, this is no longer the case with the introduction of the new format. The champion picks 1 numbers game and 6 letters games, whereas the challenger picks 2 numbers games and 5 letters games, including a potentially crucial last numbers game.

For games where there is no reigning champion (finals games and on departure of an octochamp), order of play is decided by an off-screen coin toss - the winner gets to choose whether to pick as 'champion' or 'challenger'.
