David Barnard in the Championship of Champions XIV.

David Barnard was an octochamp and semi-finalist in Series 67, as well as a participant in Championship of Champions XIV. He has also been ranked No. 1 in the Pro Ranks table on Apterous.

He died on 17 November 2022, following a cardiac arrest in the April of that year.

Heat games

Debuting the day after octochamp Heather Styles completed her run, Barnard began his Countdown career with the 9 letter word DELATIONS, running out the winner 94 – 69 against Susan Holden. Seven more wins, including three centuries, followed to see Barnard rack up 771 points.

Finals

Barnard returned in the finals as No. 2 seed, defeating Chris Marshall in the quarter-finals to set up a semi-final clash with No. 3 seed Styles. In a tight game which saw both players level after 14 rounds, it was Styles who solved BLUEINDIA to take the place in the final.

Championship of Champions XIV

Barnard returned in 2016 for Championship of Champions XIV. In the first round, he came up against Series 68 runner up Andy Platt. In a nip and tuck game which saw the lead change hands several times, Barnard held a two point advantage going into the conundrum but lost 98 – 90 to Platt. Of the fifteen shows in the championship, this was the only one to not feature a century score.

Co-events

Barnard made his Co-event debut at CobliviLon in 2012, and won CoBris 2015, defeating James Robinson in the final.
