Episode 2163 was broadcast on 29 December 1997, and was the first preliminary of Championship of Champions IX.

Pete Cashmore played Paul Peters, with Pete Cashmore winning 55 – 45, after a tie-break conundrum. The Dictionary Corner guest was Denis Norden, and the lexicographer was Mark Nyman.

This is the first, and to date only, time in the show's history that a contestant has trailed by 20 points with two regular rounds remaining, and gone on to win the match.

This episode was repeated on 25 July 2000.
