Episode Cats139, billed as 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown Series 22, Episode 3, was a special episode broadcast on 21 January 2022, as part of 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown Series 22.

The Team Captains were Roisin Conaty and Jon Richardson, their teammates were Asim Chaudhry and Josh Widdicombe respectively, while Jimmy Carr reprised his role as the host.

The match saw Jon Richardson, with the assistance of Josh Widdicombe, winning by 58 – 15 in a 7-rounder and they won a Countdown doctor's kit.

Rachel Riley was, as ever, the arithmetician. The Dictionary Corner guest was Bill Bailey, and the lexicographer was Susie Dent.

Interesting and notable moments from the episode are listed below:

1) During the Introduction, Jon introduced a sound effects machine whereby every time an innuendo was uttered, he would play a particular button. This subsequently went on for the rest of the episode. Also, Josh shared photos of his younger self via a portfolio.

2) In Round 1, the clock music was replaced by the theme from Superman. In between, "Jimmy" pretended to be a hero with a cape where he fought off a thief who stole an uncredited old lady's handbag just before the round started. After finishing him off, "Jimmy" returned her the handbag, but not before stealing her money.

3) In Round 2, Jon provided an alternative solution whereby he also had: (100 + 75 + 6) × (9 − 7) to reach the target.

4) In Round 3, the clock music was replaced by a version of it played on tubular bells by Jimmy using a pair of slippers. After the round, he offered Bill a chance to try it out.

5) In Round 5, it was dubbed a Tension Round but with a twist. Every time an E was picked (which included one that was deliberately hidden in the consonant pile so as to scare Jon even further), a loud popping noise would ensue; points were doubled, the clock music was replaced with a techno version of it coupled with sirens, flames and a voice counting down from ten was heard as well. When the time was up, confetti shot out from behind the contestants, notably scaring Jon and Josh. Thus, the maximum was worth 12 points in this case.

6) In Round 6, Jimmy tried to make a model volcano but it failed to erupt. Only when he asked Fabio, the show's permanent male model to clean it up did it do so.

NOTE 1: In this version, both players' declarations were allowed, although points were only awarded for the best answer.

NOTE 2: Roisin's declaration in Round 4 was the first instance in the history of Countdown where a numbers game was solved by simply declaring the target (due to CECIL generating a target of 100), with no mathematical operators. This was possible on one previous occasion in Episode 1504, but the no-operator solution was not actually used.

NOTE 3: In Round 6, Asim's declaration of scroat ☓ should have been allowed as it is listed in the ODO. However, this would not have impacted the scores as Josh had a longer word.

NOTE 4: The conundrum had two valid solutions: PAMPERING and REMAPPING.
