Revision as of 13:52, 11 May 2022

Episode Cats74, billed as New Year Special 2016 was a special episode broadcast on 30 December 2016, as part of 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown Series 11.

Acting Team Captain Johnny Vegas and Regular Jon Richardson were the contestants, along with Sara Pascoe and Richard Osman who were their teammates respectively, while Jimmy Carr reprised his role as the host.

The match saw Jon Richardson, with the assistance of Richard Osman, winning by 45 – 7 in an 7-rounder and they won the Countdown indoor firework display which contained fake pyrotechnics and produced only sparks.

Rachel Riley was, as ever, the arithmetician. The Dictionary Corner guest was David O'Doherty, and the lexicographer was Susie Dent. Joe Wilkinson also made a special appearance in the show dressed as a Magician, only for one of his acts to go "wrong" and resulting in the "drowning" of one of the models. He also assisted in placing the letters for Round 5 and 6.

Just before Round 5, as Johnny predicted Fabio, the show's full-time model who assisted Joe in his magic trick, would not "escape" the bag, one point was awarded to their team for guessing "correctly". Also, just before the Conundrum, Sara challenged that if she could catch a grape in her mouth by asking Johnny to throw one, they would get 40 points. However, they failed, thus no bonus points were awarded and this latter scenario was not factored in here.

Interesting and notable moments from the episode are listed below:

1) During the Introduction, Jon displayed three words he learnt in 2016, that being EPISIOTOMY, PERINEUM and MECONIUM to which they were cardboard cut-out replicas of the letters used to form those words. Also, Sara had someone dressed as a teddy bear as her mascot which sat beside her up until the end of Round 4 out of fear Jon would do harm to it.

2) In Round 1, the clock music was replaced with Stayin' Alive by the Bee Gees coupled with a disco ball shining on top of the centre of the studio. This was repeated in Round 3 where a Hawaiian-style music replaced it as well.

3) In Round 2, Jon was not asked to show his solution despite getting the same number as Richard. However, it can be assumed it was identical.

4) In Round 4, after Jon finished obtaining his solution, he went behind Sara Pascoe's back and made funny scenes using his fingers, to which she was oblivious. Also, just as Johnny got his mascot up on the table which was a Lego figure, the left arm detached off much to his disbelief.

5) In Round 5, Johnny only declared five, but David helped him spot PIRATE. Although this is technically cheating, it did not affect the outcome of the match.

6) In Round 6, Joe was swearing continously for failing to correctly guess what letter he pulled out for the selection. Also, Fabio reappeared properly again, proving that he didn't drown in the magic act.

7) During the Conundrum, the answer spelt out Richard's show that he presents on BBC One, Pointless, which was so much of a slap to his face as he did not know, that he embarrassingly said plotlines ☓ as the answer.

NOTE 1: In this version, both players' declarations were allowed, although points were only awarded for the best answer.

NOTE 2: The first Teaser's answer, fiftyish ☓, is invalid in the ODO as it is hyphenated.

NOTE 3: The conundrum had two valid solutions: POINTLESS and SLIPSTONE.
