Episode Cats79

From Countdown

Episode Cats79, billed as 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown Series 12, Episode 5 was a special episode broadcast on 10 February 2017, as part of 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown Series 12.

Acting Team Captain Joe Wilkinson and Regular Jon Richardson were the contestants, along with Roisin Conaty and David Mitchell who were their teammates respectively, while Jimmy Carr reprised his role as the host.

The match saw Jon Richardson, with the assistance of David Mitchell, winning by 74 – 7 in an 7-rounder thanks to the conundrum being worth 34 points instead of the usual 10 in a failed attempt to let Joe's team win the game and they won a Countdown unicorn which, in reality, was a white horse with a "horn" attached to its head.

Rachel Riley was, as ever, the arithmetician. The Dictionary Corner guest was Tom Allen, and the lexicographer was Susie Dent.

Interesting and notable moments from the episode are listed below:

1) During the Introduction, after Joe showed his prop to the audience, Jimmy made an uncanny joke (glory holes) to Susie, which caused the whole audience and celebrities to laugh out of control. A clip of the incident on Channel 4's Official YouTube Channel went viral after the show aired.

2) Also during the Introduction, Jon's prop was a waste basket and encouraged all the celebrities to crush their used paper after a round was over and toss it into the basket which was located in the centre of the studio. Joe managed to score after Round 1 while Jimmy managed to score after Round 3. Just before Round 5, just for fun, all the celebrities threw paper balls into the basket with a goal of seven within 30 seconds which was eventually reached. Rachel then poured out a whole basket of yellow paper balls to fill up the basket just before the clock stopped.

3) During the 30 seconds in Round 1, Jimmy made candy floss for the guests to the point that he also "made his hair" turn into candy floss and commented "I look like one of the Simpsons", to which he was obviously referring to Marge Simpson, except her hair was blue in colour while Jimmy's "hair" was pink.

4) In Round 3, although David called out for five vowels initially, they were not placed side by side on the board as Joe wanted Rachel to separate them out, thus the final layout on the board is shown below. Also, during the 30 seconds, the Countdown music was stopped as there was a Kiss Cam with alternate music going in the studio where the audience had to kiss each other if the camera pointed to them. Although Roisin was not playing that round, she got the rude five-letter word PENIS.

5) Just before Round 5, as a reward for Jon and Joe both being good sports in eating a custard cake each, one bonus point was awarded to both teams.

NOTE: In this version, both players' declarations were allowed, although points were only awarded for the best answer.
