Michael Wylie.

Michael Wylie was a finalist in the first ever final, wherein he was defeated by Joyce Cansfield. However he declined to play in the Championship of Champions I/ He went on to work as an assistant producer on the programme and therefore didn't invite himself back for the Supreme Championship either.. He was also the author of Countdown:Spreading The Word and the Countdown puzzle books.

In Series 56, he also made three appearances in the role of lexicographer, filling in for Susie Dent during her illness.

Michael Wylie died on 25 November 2008.
