Scott on a very festive set during his Championship of Champions Final
Scott Mearns winning his dictionaries in Series 41.

Scott Mearns was a Leeds University student from Montrose, Scotland. He wanted to put Montrose on the map, however, he astounded Countdonia by winning Series 41. He is one of the best 9-round players to have not contested the Supreme championship. Some would say that he is remarkable with 6 small numbers, saving his skin on a number of occasions.

Appearances

Heat Games

He first appeared on Countdown in the very first game of Series 41, beating incumbent champion Bobby Johnson by 80 – 12 in what was seen by many as a phenomenal debut performance. Bobby Johnson did not score after Round 2, but Scott could take advantage of Bobby's misdemeanours when Bobby's eight letter word, compense ☓ was disallowed. The conundrum was quite appropriate, as Scott gave a preview in 2 ways - one was the answer, the other was a preview of what was yet to come.

A very low scoring contest in his seventh preliminary game, finished Scott beating [{William Brewer]]34 – 30, but he just showed the letters were not good when he outplayed Lesley Millar 61 – 27, to become the first octochamp of Series 41, with an aggregate score of 510 (an average of 63.75), the third-highest of the nine round era, becoming the number one seed.

Finals

His Semi Final was a remarkable preformance, Scott beat Melvin Hetherington in just one round, excluding the conundrum. However, he spotted EARTHWORM in 2 seconds to book himself a place in the Christmas day final. The game finished with Scott on 68 points, and Melvin on 51.

He beat Simon Cooper in a closely-fought final on Christmas Day 1999. A good letters selection in Round 1 meant that Simon decided to play safe and go for an eight, MORALIST, whilst Scott tried a nine. However, his nine-letter-word, mortalise ☓ was disallowed. "It sounds like a word," agreed Richard and Rick Wakeman, who was in Dictionary Corner. However, his genius with 6 small numbers saved the day, and stole the lead from Simon in Round 3. When he got the conundrum PIESNMASH, he led by 18 points. Poor letters selections, especially where the vowels in one round were just E's, meant the rest of the game was quite uneventful, but Scott won by just 8 points, after Simon got the last numbers game and the conundrum PARTYNITE, which he solved in 6 seconds to say PATERNITY. The game finished with Scott on 81 points, and Simon on 73. His remarkable performances meant that he got a bye into the semi finals of the Championship of Champions X.

Championship of Champions X

He reappeared the next Thursday for a semi final in the Championship of Champions X against Terry Knowles, beating him by 72 points to 46. He then beat Kate Ogilvie in the final. The things that got him through were small mistakes by Kate, plus his own genius, solving one of Kate's numbers games, plus his own numbers selection, where, unsurprisingly, he chose 6 small numbers. He then did something truly special - he unravelled MUDHUTLOO in one second. Richard was astounded when Scott said "It's not me, but LOUDMOUTH." When the board turned over, he said, "Look at that - from MUDHUTLOO to LOUDMOUTH in one second!" He came under pressure in round 9 where his nine letter word, distorter ☓ was disallowed. Kate missed TORRIDEST, so, amazingly, Scott still led by 53 points to 34. These mistakes by Kate meant he got an unassailable lead by Round 12. He relaxed for the conundrum, UGREATONE, which turned out to be ENTOURAGE. He was the fourth grand slam winner (undefeated in the heats, finals and Championship of Champions) after Harvey Freeman, Nic Brown and Don Reid.

Special Episode

He later returned to play a special game against Championship of Champions IX winner Natascha Kearsey, losing the game 109 – 100 and his undefeated streak along with it.

As Scott was in the champions' chair, he could not take advantage of his 6 small number genius, despite getting 10 points off his 6 small number selection, but Natascha Kearsey took the lead and held it - then Scott got another word disallowed - douchal ☓, but the conundrum, SCOTTWHAP, which, unsurprisingly, he unravelled into STOPWATCH.

Notably, he scored the most points by a losing player in the Specials.
