Steve Williams was a semi-finalist from series 16 in 1988. He beat Frederick Sellers in his first appearance, and won seven more games to become an octochamp and #1 seed for the final rounds. He beat Gareth Hughes in the quarter-final, but was beaten in the semi-final by Roger Wales. Steve returned for Championship of Champions IV, and beat Hilary Hopper in the first round before losing to Tony Vick in the semi-final by way of a sudden-death conundrum. Steve's losing score of 70 remains to this day the joint-highest losing score of the 9 round game.
