An anagram solver, also known as an anagrammer is an online tool that rearranges the letters of the words to make words. In Countdown, it's preferable to have tools that find the longest words. Solvers are often used for games played over MSN Messenger to find the best words available in the letters rounds. Anagram solvers and programs can be used for other things that are not directly useful to Countdowners. For example proper nouns, solutions made up of more than one word, other languages and most importantly, contain words that are not allowed in Oxford Dictionaries Online (ODO) and omits words which are in it.
List of anagram solvers
The following anagram solvers use the ODO, which is used on Countdown, so are the most reliable:
- Apterous Lexplorer – Finds the maximum(s) from a selection. Updated every few months, but you have to be a subscriber in order to use it.
- TCSquared by Tom Chafer-Cook – Checks word validity and finds the maximum(s) from a selection.
The following anagram solvers use the English language, but none of them use the ODO, so aren't as reliable for Countdown:
- Incoherency – Shows words of all lengths.
- A2Z Scrabble Word Finder
- Andy's Anagram Solver
- LeXpert – this is no longer easily available online. It uses the two official Scrabble dictionaries, SOWPODS and OWL.
