Episode Cats89, billed as 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown Series 14, Episode 3 was a special episode broadcast on 1 September 2017, as part of 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown Series 14.

Acting Team Captain Alan Carr and Regular Jon Richardson were the contestants, along with Katherine Ryan and Jason Manford who were their teammates respectively, while Jimmy Carr reprised his role as the host.

The match saw Alan Carr, with the assistance of Katherine Ryan, winning by 29 – 24 in an 7-rounder and they won a Countdown "grandfather clock" (There was no mechanism inside other than the pendulum.)

Rachel Riley was, as ever, the arithmetician. The Dictionary Corner guests was Ivan Brackenbury, and the lexicographer was Susie Dent.

Interesting and notable moments from the episode are listed below:

1) Jon's props consisted of tennis balls which he juggled during the 30 seconds in Round 1 and later tried to catch and juggled more in Round 2 by standing up and catching the balls from a firer but failed as he either dodged them or they ended up hitting him.

2) In Round 1, despite Katherine and Jon getting the same word, Jon was not asked to show it to Katherine to prove he got it.

3) During the 30 seconds in Round 3, Jimmy drank an "Enlargement Potion" to the point his tongue "grew out" and couldn't speak properly.

4) After Katherine had gone wrong in Round 4, Rachel savagely mentioned that she "only found two ways" although she only showed one. This incident would later become viral on Channel 4's YouTube channel.[1]

5) Similar to the previous episode, in 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown Series 14, Episode 2, the X in Round 5 which was originally the fourth letter was thrown out. It is worth noting that with the original selection with the X retained and the last letter E missing, the maximum score would have been ten points less as a nine-letter word could not be formed.

6) During the 30 seconds in Round 6, as Jimmy tried to collect Popcorn, the machine short-circuited, causing sparks and popcorn to fly to the point it made a mountain over his entire body. Later, Fabio delievered popcorn to all the celebrities.

NOTE 1: In this version, both players' declarations were allowed, although points were only awarded for the best answer.

NOTE 2: CECIL generated identical targets to the first two Numbers Round in 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown Series 12, Episode 9 and in the same order just under three months earlier.

NOTE 3: This episode is no longer available on Channel 4's website following Ivan's admission in January 2023 that he had downloaded child pornography.
