Episode S23 was broadcast on 30 May 2005, as a special episode. It was a 15-round game between Austin Shin and Beth Sutton. Both were notable for achieving success on the show before the age of 16. Austin lost to Series 49 champion John Davies by just one point, John's smallest margin of victory. Beth won three games in the same Series before losing to Derek Pollard, and missed out on qualifying for the quarter-finals by just one win. The Dictionary Corner guest was Bernard Ingham, and the lexicographer was Alison Heard.
NOTE: Austin's declaration of SWINGED in round 12 was valid – it's the past participle of SWINGE, making the final score 105 – 67, but instead it was 98 - 67.
