John Davies was a contestant in series 49, first appearing on 2nd May 2003. he became the first octochamp of the series after a run which included tough contestants such as Scrabble prodigy Austin Shin and future CoBris organiser Jerry Humphreys. He returned for the final rounds as #1 seed 20 points ahead of the Series' only other Octochamp Martin Gardner. He beat #8 seed Christine Scott in the quarter-final before seeing off Andrew Tatham in the semi-final. The final against David Wilson turned out not to be a classic, as John ran away with it, spotting the conundrum in one second and winning by 44 points.

He returned for Championship of Champions XII, beating Gary Male in the first round. In his quarter-final against Paul Gallen both players scored a nine in the first round, however John's offering of GRATINEES was refused as it's an adjective and cannot be pluralised, while Paul's STINGAREE was allowed. This cost John as he went into the conundrum 12 points behind and thus couldn't win, had he spotted either of the nines (there's also RESEATING) he would have been able to win. However it was Paul that got the conundrum and won the game by 22 points.
