On his debut episode against five-time winner Sue Telfer, Bartlett found three nine-letter words to win with 124 points. He added another five nines to his tally over the course of his unbeaten preliminary run, which involved two crucial conundrums. In his eighth show, he rebounded from 12 points behind, winning the final letters game and the final numbers game to lead by four points by the crucial conundrum ITHARDENS.
