Tony Baylis was the champion of Series 36 and a participant in Championship of Champions IX. He was a Program Manager from Stratford.

He first appeared on Countdown on 4 August 1997, beating Jo Lack 50 – 34 in the 26th heat of Series 36. Tony went on to win five more games before losing at the hands of Roger Green. Tony's 6 wins saw him return for the finals as the No. 4 seed, where he saw off the challenge of Andy Stacey and Bhavin Manek on his way to the final against Maria Boyes. The final was a close-run affair, but a messed-up numbers game at the very end spelled doom for Maria, meaning Tony outran her by a score of 52 – 66 and emerged as the Series 36 champion.

Tony later returned for Championship of Champions IX, but was beaten in the first round by Ruth Collier on a crucial conundrum.

Outside of Countdown, he was also a proficient amateur snooker player between 1987 and 2003, winning numerous amateur titles and had been on the Wildcard for several professional WPBSA circuit tournaments, but never managed to qualify for a professional tournament.
