Talk:JOLT

From Countdown
Revision as of 04:13, 2 November 2010 by Reams (talk | contribs) (Recaps: new section)

The Doctor, I appreciate your enthusiasm but please do not make articles unless you intend to at least start to fill them with information. There is a lot of information about JOLT on the old c4countdown Yahoo! Group which you should begin to read, collate, copy across and wikify for this article to be purposeful. Thanks, Chris 'Crispy' Philpot 12:45, 13 July 2010 (BST)

I mean..... it's worth having an article, but there is such a thing called development, and I was quite surprised that this has not yet been created. Someone like Howard or James can develop this. I don't play it, but the ball has to start rolling.
BTW The next 2 weeks will be diverted to wikiwork. Got nothing better to do. The Doctor 13:49, 13 July 2010 (BST)
Perhaps you could make this part of your wikiwork. ;-) I just think that if someone who doesn't know about the Wiki/c4c/etc. was to stumble across the JOLT page, it would be better for them to see either a blank page, implying it hadn't been started, or a page that was clearly being developed. If they saw the page as it stands, I'd be concerned that they would think that the whole wiki was that underdeveloped and leave. Hopefully you see what I mean?
Best wishes, Chris 'Crispy' Philpot 16:42, 13 July 2010 (BST)
OK, how's this? The Doctor 16:49, 13 July 2010 (BST)

A few things to say here. Firstly, I didn't host my own game - Stewart was in charge, but was too busy to write the report and so I stepped in. Secondly, this marks the end of all the games in Group C, with Ben going through top of the group and me as runner-up. Bad luck, Ian! You were a good opponent. :o)

Finally, and rather funnily, Stewart listed the final score as 60-46, magically producing four points out of nowhere for both of us! Would you like us to arrange you some addition lessons with Clive, mate? ;o) Thanks for hosting well. :o)

Congratulations to both players for producing yet another exciting game played to a very high standard. As you can see, Jon was beatable on only one of the letters rounds, a particularly excellent achievement given that some difficult words were available. He needs to work on his numbers though!! Jon will face either Chris or Sandie in his semi-final.

Commiserations go to Peter who put up an excellent fight, with a stunning word in Round 7 particularly, BORNITE. Julian hit home beating his opponent on two rounds with the fantastic words ELUATES and GERONTIC, the latter of course being a "Julian Fell" word on the Countdown show itself! Peter chose tactically for Round 8, knowing Julian's weakness, but the plan backfired somewhat when a not-too-impossible target was produced. The method Peter spotted was very elegant, it must be said!

Once again, congratulations go to Julian for a place in the semis and well played to Peter who put on a good performance.

Thanks also go to everyone in the room:

Great play from both contestants, and Mr Stitcher a worthy opponent for Julian in the final.

The second semifinal between Ben Wilson and Julian Fell was played 9pm Thurs with what was almost certainly the largest audience for an online game watching.

Final Score: Ben Wilson 26 - 76 Julian Fell

So Julian wins through to the final with the highest score of the tournament and almost certainly the best performance as well, being unbeatable by DC on any of the letters games. Commiserations to Ben whose score was a very unfair reflection on how well he played. The final is between Julian Fell and Jon Stitcher, which is rematch from the group I was unlucky enough to be drawn in, albeit over 15 rounds this time.

Cheers, Paul Howe

Countdown online tournament final Review Tuesday 10 September 2004

C1: Julian Fell, series 48 champion and organiser of this tournament, who reached the final by topping his group, beating Jon Stitcher 57-50 in a close game, and then defeating Paul Howe 61-51 on a crucial conundrum. Julian then put in some amazing performances in the knock-out stages, defeating peter Lee 71-46 and pummelling, erm, me by 76 points to 26 to earn his place in the final. DEMIREP, RATHOLED, PRECISIAN- the only 9 of the tournament so far!- and the old favourite GERONTIC C2: Jon Stitcher, who won 3 games in series 52 before succumbing to eventual octochamp (none of that octavian silliness here!) He then defeated Soo Reams 42-38 after an unsolved crucial conundrum of OURTEMPLE (PETROLEUM), and then saw of the challenge of Sandie Simonis in the semi-final, defeating her 50-48 to reach the final. So, congratulations to Julian on winning his own tournament- no cries of "fix!" from the crowd, please! Jon played superbly throughout and did extremely well to take Julian to the crucial conundrum, but in the end, the better man on the night won. All that's left now is to find out who's organising the next tournament! :-)

Also many thanks to Jim Bentley and Veronica Purdey for unknowingly letting me plagiarise their summary template ;-)
