Rick Vanes was script associate for Countdown between 1982 and 1988, and also for the 1997 Christmas Countdown special and 1998 Celebrity Countdown series. Learning at an early meeting that Richard Whiteley had a penchant for puns, he worked as many as possible into the contestant intros and links, thereby introducing a style of presentation which continued throughout Whiteley's tenure as host.
