Rick Vanes was a script associate for Countdown between 1982 and 1988, and also for the 1997 Christmas Countdown special and 1998 Celebrity Countdown series. Learning at an early meeting that Richard Whiteley had a penchant for puns, he worked as many as possible into the contestant intros and links, thereby introducing a style of presentation which continued throughout Whiteley's tenure as host.
