Peter Hutchings was a semi-finalist from series 40. He made his debut defeating John Morrison, and he went onto win a further seven games to become an octochamp. His final heat game is notorious for being what is considered the 'worst game in Countdown history', which Peter won 21-11 (after leading 8-0 at half time). Nonetheless, Peter returned for the final rounds as #1 seed, and beat Stan Arnott in the quarter-final before losing to eventual series champion Terence English in the semis. Peter would return to Countdown in 2003 to record a special game against his daughter Sally Hutchings, who tragically died before the programme could be broadcast. Sally won the game 104-87.
