Origins of Words is a short slot presented by Susie Dent between rounds 9 and 10. The featured was created in 2007 to recognise Susie's popularity with Countdown fans. The name is slightly misleading as she often does the origins of phrases as well as words. The slot lasts a couple of minutes and involved Susie explaining the etymology of a few words or phrases. For a couple of weeks during Series 58 she started using words and phrases from other languages like French and German, and giving the literal translation into English.
