Series 47 ran from December 2001 to June 2002. The forty-seventh of 53 series presented by Richard Whiteley was won by Chris Wills. It featured 8 octochamps, the only time in history that all the finalists for a series have been octochamps. The series also featured three seven-time winners that did not make the finals – David Franks, Peter Coutts and Julia Wilkinson, although Wilkinson returned as the #5 seed in Series 48.

Chris Wills won the first quarter-final against Brenda Jolley who nevertheless gave a good account of herself. #2 seed Tom Hargreaves couldn't put Mike Pullin away and was held to a crucial conundrum, but Hargreaves solved SIDSDIMES to score 100 and take his place the semi-finals. The third quarter-final between Kevin Thurlow and Lee Hartley was equally close, and after both players missed a nine (RANDOMISE/ROMANISED) it was another crucial conundrum, this time spotted by Thurlow. The fourth quarter-final brought the 3rd consecutive crucial conundrum – Rupert Stokoe spotted UNDAUNTED to beat Wendy Roe.

The first quarter-final produced a great performance from Chris Wills, who despite missing PECTORALS racked up 118 points, winning by 40. Tom Hargreaves was equally impressive as he equalled Dictionary Corner and Carol in every round, but couldn't solve the conundrum OUTERSUNS. Even without the conundrum he score 109 points.

In the final, Wills took the lead with HOMAGE and ADMIRALS, and never looked like losing from that point onwards, with other impressive finds like OBTRUDES and ADOPTIVE. Hargreaves beat Wills with GLACIER but it was not enough as Wills came out the winner with an impressive 110 – 67 scoreline.

This series also included a 3-episode Junior Championship from 12-14 March. Four recent child contestants, Perry Fung from Series 40, Amey Deshpande and Andrew Hulme from Series 42, and Bruce Lambert from Series 43 competed, with Andrew Hulme coming out the overall winner.
