Derek Hazell
Derek Hazell has been watching Countdown on and off all his life (even though it only started when he was 6). He became a permanent viewer around the time that Des O'Connor joined, as this coincided with his gaining a Virgin catch up device. Known as Dez, he has chatted about Countdown on the Internet for several years, sometimes sensibly. He has done this on various Yahoo! groups and forums, and even has a section dedicated to the show on his own forum, Gandiseeg, which he founded with Richard Brittain, with support from Gevin.
In July 2010, he attended his first unofficial Countdown tournament, CoLei Summer Special, where he embarassed himself again by performing badly in front of an audience.
