8 out of 10 Cats Does Countdown Series 9, Episode 11 was a special episode broadcast on 29 October 2016, as part of 8 out of 10 Cats Mash-ups Series 9.
8 Out of 10 Cats regular Sean Lock was a contestant, along with Danny Dyer who were against acting team captain Joe Wilkinson and Gabby Logan, while Jimmy Carr reprised his role as the host.
The match saw Sean Lock, with the assistance of Danny Dyer, winning by 46 – 11 in an 7-rounder.
Rachel Riley was the arithmetician for this episode. The Dictionary Corner guest was David O'Doherty, and the lexicographer was Susie Dent.
There were many notable moments in this episode in every single round, as listed belows:
In Round 1, it is odd that after Joe declared the word "GRAFTER", Susie Dent said it was invalid as there were two "l"s that needed to make up that word; it should have been two "r"s instead.
In Round 2, Danny Dyer voluntarily did not participate and as a result, he did not have an answer to declare.
In Round 3, Joe Wilkinson kept interrupting Danny Dyer while he was selecting the letters by deliberately asking for specific letters which is not possible, but this did not stop Rachel from picking Danny's selection as he had the right to choose the letters for that round.
In Round 4, David O'Doherty was invited to give the solution on behalf of Rachel Riley. Notably, as he started to write out the solution the marker ink faded and in a rage he threw it on the floor with so much force that it caused the "25" to drop off from the board.
In Round 5, with only 8 letters on the board David O'Doherty immediately spotted the word "IRELAND" which Joe used to his advantage but unfortunately as countries were considered a mass noun, they are disallowed, thus no points were awarded to his team.
In Round 6, the fourth letter was originally an "X", but was thrown out as Joe Wilkinson said nobody liked that letter and was replaced by a "W". Also, encouraged by Jimmy's words to get a nine-letter word, he said ETOWHATLA and to amusingly prove it "was" in the dictionary, Susie brought out the Pencam and showed him what he spelled which was written on another piece of paper with a pen sticked onto the Dictionary.
There was a bonus round which involved both teams guessing what Danny Dyer wrote on two of his tweets with a word on each tweet blacked out, however no one got the correct word for both. Instead, there was an extra bonus asking why Danny considered himself to be middle class; 5 points were awarded to Sean's team for Sean Lock having guessed the correct answer to the extra bonus question.
NOTE: In this version, both players' declarations were allowed, although points were only awarded for the best answer.
